Nigeria’s President, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, is known to have dropped his desire to change the name of the University of Lagos to something else. This became known when the newly installed Chancellor of the University, Prof Jerry Gana, a veteran of All Governments in Power in Nigeria, hailed the President for changing his mind.
The name-change was roundly condemned by Nigerians who saw it as poor judgment of cheap politics just as the Alumni of the University took the President to court to stop the name change.
Although an orchestra of presidential aides made elaborate effort to justify the name change by sponsoring television opinionists to teach Nigerians that Harvard is the name of a person, they probably eventually tired out of pushing the subject.
